Das Bild erzählt die Geschichte der Zerstörung des britischen Munitionsdepots durch den Rebellen Hone Heke.

Hone Wiremu Heke Pokai (1810-1850) war ein Maori-Häuptling in Neuseeland.

Er gilt als Auslöser des Flagstaff War 1845-1846, der ersten Episode der Neuseelandkriege von 1845-1872.

In 1845 Hone Heke and his allies sack Kororareka (Russell).

Colonists take to the boats in the harbour and watch in ecstatic horror as the British ammunition dump blows up.

The colours are symptomatic of the violence of the explosion.

The „Dies Irae“ is a Latin hymn –

„Day of Wrath, that awful day …“

Die Kolonisten flüchteten zu den Booten im Hafen und beobachteten mit Schaudern, wie das britische Munitionsdepot explodierte.
